Building a Routine!

written by Emma Bartley

Building a routine is very important in your schooling life. While it isn’t something you might automatically think of when you think of school, it can impact how well you do. Here are some tips on how to successfully build a routine during the school year!

1. Set out your clothes and make your lunch the night before.

While something small, this can make your mornings so much better. If you have everything laid out and ready to go, you are assured that you won’t have to frantically run around last-minute to find a pair of shorts or your lunch box. It can also allow you to have a few extra minutes of sleep:).

2. Start studying days in advance.

It is so important, especially in high school and beyond, to start studying days in advance. If you try to cram the night before, it is harder to retain the information. Plus, if you have to study for hours for just one day, it can mess up your schedule for that day so that you can’t get all that you want accomplished. If you start studying earlier, you will feel more prepared going into the test and have a better night before the test!

3. Allow yourself to have breaks.

While you may think that you can just study for three hours, you are most likely to get distracted at some point and want to take a break. However, if you don’t schedule breaks, you might get sucked into your phone or watch TV for more than you wanted, and before you know, your break becomes way too long. But, if you schedule a five to ten minute break every hour or so, you can keep on schedule and allow for better studying.

4. Go to sleep as early as you can.

Sleep is so important. When you are better rested, you feel better about life in general. You are energized and able to accomplish more, and you can remember more information for your classes. It is vital that you go to sleep as early as possible, attempting to get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night.

5. Look at everything you have for the next week on Sunday.

Take a look at your calendar at the beginning of the week to see everything that is going on. By doing this, you can figure out what your busiest days are going to be and plan ahead so that you are not super stressed on that day. For me personally, looking ahead and planning makes me feel much better about the week to come.

I hope that your school year is as stress-free as possible! By building a routine that works for you, you can help to reduce your stress and make life just a little bit better!
