Tuesday Tidbit: Finding Time for Yourself

written by Jessica Stein

Life can get busy as you go back to school or continue to work, and it’s hard to find time for yourself. If you are guilty of putting yourself second to school, sports, your job, your social life, etc., use one or more of these tips to help you get more in tune with yourself while also aiding in relaxation and stress relief.

Set aside 10-15 minutes

Some days it may be more difficult, but try and save a little time in your day to really unwind and have some quiet time. It doesn’t matter if your 10-15 minutes is at 6 am or 6 pm; this small act will ultimately benefit you greatly.

Find your quiet place

The same place you sleep or do your (home)work at is not conducive to relaxation. Finding a new, cozy spot where you can unwind without falling asleep is prime real estate for your down time.

Make a playlist

If you’re like me, I always enjoy a good playlist that fits whatever situation or mood I’m in at that time. There are plenty of playlists out there that have calming sounds or low music, or you could choose to make your own with your favorite chill songs.

Brew some tea

I know that not everyone enjoys warm tea; some may like iced tea better or just don’t like tea at all, but I suggest you try it if you haven’t already. A cup of warm/hot tea (whichever you prefer) can sooth the body and even be therapeutic.

Get off your feet

It’s common for people to be out and about on their feet all day and not realize how tired they are until it’s time for bed. If you have something to prop your feet up on (a recliner, pillows, a box, anything really) to take the load off of them without falling asleep, it can do wonders.

Grab a book

If you are someone who enjoys reading, pick up a good book. It doesn’t matter if it’s one you have read 1,000 times or something new, as long as you are calm while reading. The decision is up to you!

Take deep breaths

Be aware of your breathing. If it helps you personally, you can do some breathing exercises you already know or look up some new ones. One that helps me is to think of what I have done already for the day and what I still have to do while I breathe in, and as I release the air, I release all the stress and responsibilities for the time being.

Let your mind wander

Being bored is not a bad thing! See where your mind travels to, revisit your imagination, or just sit and stare. Just as you might want a nap during the day, your mind wants a little break too!

Go for a jog

For those of you who like to exercise (as I do), you know that going on a run can solve many things for you. Running can help clear your mind, release anger or tension, put you in a better mood, and make you feel good about yourself after. Going out for a run allows you to see all that you can accomplish, feel stronger physically and mentally, and combine some time for yourself with a workout. Depending on how you push yourself, you could feel a bit sore the next day, but this is good! This just confirms what you already knew – that you worked hard.
