Friday Fun: Sisters from the Same Mister

written by Emma Bartley

I’m sitting in my room when I hear a loud scream. I run out to see my older sister, Rosie, standing over her broken Urban Decay eyeshadow palette. Out of the corner of my eye, I see my littlest sister, Sarah, sprinting into her room and locking the door…she’s the culprit. All while this is happening, my other sister, Gracie, is taking an hour long shower in the bathroom that all of us have to share. When I get in the shower after her, the water is freezing cold.

I am the second of four girls, and although they can sometimes be a total pain, I love them more than anything in the world.

Sisters annoy, interfere, criticize. Indulge in monumental sulks, in huffs, in snide remarks. Borrow. Break. Monopolize the bathroom. Are always underfoot. But if catastrophe should strike, sisters are there. Defending you against all comers. -Pam Brown

My sisters are my best friends. They are always there to help me when I’m down and cheer me on when I’m succeeding. They have taught me so many valuable life lessons and bring out the best in me every day. Here are just a few of the lessons that I have learned while living with three other girls.

Pursue your dreams.

My older sister, Rosie, has taught me to pursue my dreams. Rosie is one of the most creative people I know and has excelled in many aspects of her life because she utilizes it. Rosie has started her own mini photography business (you can check it out here!). She shares her beautiful singing voice with others through play productions she has participated in. Rosie was even in a short film about zombies, titled East Point! Rosie is such an inspiration to me and has encouraged me to utilize my talents and follow my dreams, just as she did.

Be humble.

Rosie has been an amazing older sister. She boosts me up and congratulates me, but she always keeps me in check. I have Rosie to thank for keeping me humble and making sure that I don’t brag when I succeed. Humility, in my opinion, is one of the most important virtues in life, and Rosie has helped me to develop that.

Laugh.

Gracie has shown me how to have fun. She is always there to crack a joke and make the situation 100 times better. She’s also not afraid to laugh at herself. She recognizes when something is funny and doesn’t take it to heart. She has taught me to be more accepting of myself and to just laugh it off.

Be aware of others.

Gracie, although sometimes very dramatic, is one of the most compassionate people I know. She is so aware of how others are feeling and very sympathetic towards everyone. Gracie is the first one to try to calm someone down when they are ready to cry or give a hug when she realizes someone is stressed. She has taught me to not always focus on myself but to be aware of others that are around me and what they are going through, too.

Be a good role model.

My littlest sister, Sarah, is beautiful, inside and out, and because of her I strive to be a good role model. I think of Sarah when making decisions and how she would react. I suggest to everyone to find that person in your life that makes you want to do good, because they could possibly become one of your guiding moral influences.

Own up to your mistakes.

Sarah cracks me up when she does something wrong. If she’s caught, she doesn’t try to argue or worm her way out of trouble; she just says “I’m sorry” and never does that wrong behavior again. She owns up to her mistakes and learns from them as well. I can definitely learn from her in accepting my wrongdoings. I think it is one of her best qualities and I look up to her for that.

My sisters, no matter how young or old, have taught me amazing life lessons and have been my best friends through it all. Some say that friends are the sisters God never gave you, but to me, sisters are the friends that God blessed me with.

There’s nobody in the world that knows me better than my sister. -Tia Mowry
