Women of the Week: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

written by Kate H.

What makes a friendship great? Some say it’s honesty. Others say its trust. But for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler it’s simply having fun, joking around, and not taking things too seriously! We can all learn from their light-hearted friendship to let go a little more and be comfortable with who we are and where we are in our life. Here are some fun facts about their strong friendship!

Like all friendships, it had to start somewhere. They met each other at an improv session in Chicago where the director introduced the two after seeing many similarities in their confidence and presentation styles. The girls immediately hit it off and from then on, auditioned for the same casts so they could always be together.

Not only are their comedic styles similar, but to some they look alike! The two are so well know for always being together that although they have different hair colors people still confuse the two! Amy recalls being asked to do her “Sarah Palin,” which is an act popularly performed by Tina.

Over their 20 year long friendship, they have developed many inside jokes and memories. From beauty tips to nicknames, Amy and Tina share everything with each other. Amy says if it weren’t for Tina she wouldn’t know that people actually pluck and dye their eyebrows. When they first met, Amy had been bleaching her hair but just letting her eyebrows go natural. Tina says, “So this was a big thing that happened to me, and I passed that information on to you.” Their friendship was off to a great start and eventually Amy developed a nickname for Tina: Betty, because her real first name is Elizabeth.

Together they hosted the Golden Globes for 3 consecutive years in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Their brutal honesty and bluntness created many hilarious openings to the shows that left America wanting more. They succeeded together!

The two joke that their kids will get married. It just so happen that Amy has two sons and Tina has two daughters. Coincidence?

Others have commented on their friendship too. Holland Taylor in Parade said, “I worked with [Tina Fey] and Amy Poehler [in Baby Mama]. Oh my God, I’ve never had so much fun working with anybody as with those two. They’re very different [women]. Tina is very cool and mental. Amy’s just this gushing little oil pump of affection. And yet they’re absolutely peas in a pod. They adore each other. They’re like sisters. They’re like Scottie and Westie puppies in a basket.”

Amy has also described Tina as “the same way back then as she is now, which is really, really funny and incredibly hard-working and a very supportive and loyal friend. But she was a lot less rich. That was the only difference: she was like 100 percent less rich.”

Their friendship started long ago and there is no end in sight. It is a great example of the limitless friendships we can make by accepting ourselves and others, looking out for one another, and not being afraid to crack a joke every now and then.

Aside from their constant comedy the two are committed to building confidence and spreading positivity. I loved these honest, straightforward quotes, and I hope you enjoy them, too.

“Do your thing and don’t care if they like it.” -Tina

“Some people say, ‘Never let them see you cry.’ I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.” -Tina

“Whatever the problem, be part of the solution. Don’t just sit around raising questions and pointing out obstacles.” -Tina

“There are no mistakes, only opportunities.” -Tina

“That is the motto women should constantly repeat over and over again. Good for her! Not for me.” -Amy

“The only way we will survive is by being kind. The only way we can get by in this world is through the help we receive from others. No one can do it alone, no matter how great the machines are.” -Amy
