What If a Friendship Doesn’t Work?

written by Kate H.

Friends. They are an essential part of our lives. We do everything with them from shopping, to watching movies, to crying, to laughing. We spend years building trust, making memories, and supporting our friends.

Then something happens. What do you do when a friendship does not work out? What happens when you begin to become more distant? We all experience this situation at some point in our lives, whether we realize it or not. It’s important to remember that this natural and it is okay. You are allowed to feel sad. However, never let something like this make you question yourself or change your values. Although you may hear it all of the time, it is important to always remember to be true to yourself and never give up on finding those people who will compliment you and your best qualities.

Although you may hear it all of the time, it is important to always remember to be true to yourself and never give up on finding those people who will compliment you and your best qualities.

Friends are put in our lives at certain times for certain reasons. Although it can hurt and feel strange without a friend you had for years, often times even stronger friendships will develop after you let go. Remember, there is a difference between giving up when something is hard and choosing to step back when something is not working.

Also, letting go of a friendship right now does not mean you will not be friends later. You never know what a year or two or four may bring for any relationship in your life. You just have to be patient and be open.

Losing a friendship is tough, there is no denying it. How you handle it, though, is most important. Remember, attitude it everything. Be positive, always meet new people and never be afraid to be yourself!

“You have to let people go. Everyone who’s in your life is meant to be in your journey, but not all of them are meant to stay.” -Unknown
