Meditation Monday: Let’s Breathe
by Emma Bartley
August means the beginning of school. At least for me, I begin to get very stressed right around this time. A simple way to relax that not many of us think about is breathing. Breathing is important in meditation because it focuses your thoughts on both your body and your mind. Your breath will tell you whether you are calm or agitated, but it also moves your body, making you more aware of your physicality. Breathing helps to connect your body to your mind.
Here are simple steps that will help calm both your body and mind within minutes!
- Stand or sit comfortably with a straight spine.
- Relax your shoulders and place your hands on your lap or where they are comfortable.
- Exhale completely, drawing the diaphragm in and up.
- Slowly inhale through your nose. Your belly should rise, follower by your mid-chest and finally your upper-chest as air fills your lungs.
- Pause.
- Slowly exhale through your nose.
- Repeat this process three times, taking fuller breaths with each inhale.
