Confidence versus conceit. This one of the most difficult concepts to fully understand. Whether it’s out of fear of criticism for being “cocky” or fear of saying something embarrassing, many people are apprehensive when it comes to being confident. However, confidence is one of the most important qualities to have for both your social and personal development. Without self-confidence, it is too easy to begin doing things solely to please those around you rather than for yourself.
Not only is it important to be confident, but in some instances it is necessary. For example, job interviews and college applications both require you to proudly articulate your accomplishments in order to accurately portray your character to the interviewer or admissions counselor. Most importantly, you must remember that it is okay to do so. Too often we feel embarrassed or like we are doing something wrong by simply sharing something we are proud of. It takes time and practice to feel comfortable “tooting your own horn” but it is an essential life skill.
This pride and confidence will also improve your overall morale. When you are able to be confident in yourself without feeling the need to prove it to others or put others down, you allow yourself to be unapologetically you. By completely accepting yourself, your life’s experiences will be more fulfilling because you will spend less time second-guessing yourself and more time appreciating what makes you unique!
