Tuesday Tidbit: Book Recommendation – 365 Days of Wonder
By Emma Bartley
365 Days of Wonder is written by R.J. Palacio and is an accompaniment book to the novel Wonder. This book is a series of precepts, or words to live by, for each day of the year. For example, the precept for January 1st is: “We carry within us the wonders we seek around us” (Sir Thomas Browne).
I absolutely loved this book and found it very inspirational. It gives you a quote that you can focus your day around. It also ends every month with a longer lesson, and I loved those as well. My favorite part of the book, though, was that R.J. Palacio included precepts that she had gotten in the mail from children who had read Wonder and loved it! It made the book more relatable to hear advice from kids.
Here are some quotes that I found especially inspirational!
“Whatever you are, be a good one.” -Abraham Lincoln
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the single candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” -Bukkyo Denis Kyokai, The Teaching of Buddha
“The man who moves a mountain must start by moving small stones.” -Chinese proverb
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” -Jimmy Johnson
“Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.” -Henry van Dyke
“To the world, you are one person. But to one person, you may be the world!” -Unknown
“You don’t get harmony when everyone sings the same note.” -Doug Floyd
Lastly, one of my favorites is from a kid named J.J. who read Wonder. His precept is this: “When life gives you lemons, make orange juice. Be unique!”
